Turkey agrees to sell drones to Egypt

Turkey has agreed to sell drones to Egypt, a move that comes after the two countries normalized relations following a years-long rift.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is visiting Egypt on February 14 to meet with his counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. It will be his first visit since the two countries restored ties to the ambassador level last year.

Erdogan and el-Sisi are expected to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including trade, energy, defense, and security.

According to Reuters, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that normalizing relations with Egypt is important for it to obtain certain technologies, and that Turkey has already reached an agreement with Egypt to supply it with drones and other technologies.

The Bayraktar TB2 is classified as a tactical military drone. It can fly at an altitude of 20,000 to 27,000 feet (about 8,000 meters), carry a payload of 150 kilograms, and fly for up to 25 hours continuously.

It can also perform surveillance, reconnaissance, and instant destruction of targets during the day and night. It provides the Turkish Armed Forces’ operations centers with real-time information that it collects during its mission in the air, and it is also capable of targeting specific threats with ammunition and missiles carried on board.
