Singapore’s ST Engineering has captured the attention of military experts at the World Defense Show 2026 with the debut of its latest innovation: a 20-ton Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, the Rhino 4×4.
The Rhino represents a paradigm shift in modern combat doctrine. It integrates advanced hybrid propulsion, silent operation capabilities, and manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) systems, effectively serving as both a frontline combat platform and a mobile tactical command hub.
Speaking exclusively to Defense Arabia, company representatives emphasized that the Rhino was designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern armies seeking high operational efficiency and an ultra-low thermal signature. Addressing the highly competitive global defense market, ST Engineering underscored its strategic flexibility and full readiness to localize production and transfer technology to regional nations, supporting the sovereign requirements of its clients.
Technical Specifications
The Rhino features a unique hybrid-electric propulsion system engineered to maximize field performance. The vehicle utilizes a core 300 hp diesel engine—produced by the renowned Cummins and adaptable for other engine types—coupled with an advanced electric drive system. This combination doubles the total power delivered to the wheels to a massive 600 hp. This hybrid architecture reduces fuel consumption by up to 30%, significantly extending operational range and alleviating logistical burdens in the theater of operations.
In terms of protection and survivability, the platform provides Level 3 ballistic protection. A key engineering innovation is the strategic placement of the hybrid system’s batteries outside the V-hull crew citadel. This isolation ensures that if the batteries are struck by hostile fire or suffer thermal runaway, the crew remains completely shielded from explosion or fire hazards. The platform is armed with a 30mm low-pressure main gun, compatible with various turret configurations, and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun for close-range engagement.
Advanced Tactical Capabilities
The Rhino’s capabilities extend far beyond traditional kinetic missions, offering a suite of exceptional tactical solutions for ground formations. Prominent among these is the “Silent Drive” feature, which allows the vehicle to disengage its combustion engine and rely entirely on battery power to traverse up to 25 km at speeds of 50 km/h with a negligible acoustic signature. Additionally, the “Silent Watch” capability enables the operation of all surveillance systems, radars, and climate control for eight continuous hours with the engine off. This effectively eliminates the vehicle’s thermal signature—cooling the engine and exhaust that typically appear as “hot spots” on enemy thermal sensors—rendering the Rhino a virtual “ghost” on the battlefield.
Functioning as a mobile micro-grid, three vehicles can be linked via dedicated ports to power field command centers, negating the need to tow cumbersome traditional generators behind troop formations. The vehicle also acts as both a self-contained shield and a smart offensive platform, equipped with advanced electronic jamming (soft kill) supported by air threat detection radars, alongside kinetic interception capabilities (hard kill).
Finally, the Rhino features an exceptional concept for manned-unmanned integration, capable of launching swarms of loitering munitions or reconnaissance UAVs from under armor. It houses eight drones in integrated side launchers, plus vertically launched units from the roof, all safely controlled by the crew via digital cockpit interfaces. Furthermore, the vehicle is capable of towing a 3-ton Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) which self-charges its batteries during the towing process. This creates a fully integrated combat system utilizing intuitive digital interfaces and surround-view cameras, allowing soldiers to operate the unmanned assets efficiently with minimal training.
