The Saudi Ministry of Defense has announced the graduation of the first unit of national personnel specialized in operating and maintaining the advanced U.S. THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) air defense system.
This milestone comes nearly eight years after the signing of the acquisition contract with the United States and marks a significant step in the ongoing modernization of the Saudi Armed Forces.
In 2017, the Kingdom signed a defense agreement with Washington to acquire seven THAAD missile defense batteries. The deal includes 44 launchers, 360 interceptor missiles, and seven advanced AN/TPY-2 radars, with a total value of up to $15 billion.
The agreement also stipulates that part of the system’s components will be manufactured within the Kingdom, as part of an ambitious plan to localize military industries and achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
