ModernizedT-90M Proryv (export version – T-90MS) tanks manufactured by Uralvagonzavod(UVZ, part of the Rostec state corporation) will receive an updated active protection system (APS) with an anti-drone mode to detect and counter drones.
“This year, we implemented aprogram to refine the APS software, introducing an ‘Anti-Drone’ submode. Workis currently underway to install an active protection system that will directlycounter drones, shooting them down as they approach,” a representative ofthe Russian Defense Ministry’s military acceptance department said on the Rossiya-24 television channel on 1st January.
The news report also stated that the fiber-optic drones would be supported by the Arena-M activedefense system, which automatically tracks and neutralizes any threats byfiring an interceptor at incoming anti-tank missiles or drones. This system isalready installed on upgraded T-72B3A tank.
It was previously reported that Uralvagonzavod sent a convoy of upgraded T-90M Proryv tanks to Russian troops.
Russia’s T-90 tanks rank among the best in the world, President Vladimir Putin said in an interview withIndia Today in December.
Currently Russia is marketing the latest T-90MS version. The upgraded T-90MS was presented for thefirst time this year at IDEX 2025 in Abu Dhabi. The displayed tank received thelatest technologies and new technical solutions. It has reactive armor, bar screens,electronic warfare against drones, and differentiated armor principle.
As the Russian Center for Analysis of WorldArms Trade (CAWAT) underlined in its late 2025 “Global Armored Vehicle Market: Winners andLosers” report, Russia is one of the world’s top three tank producers andexporters, along with China and the United States.
CAWAT: “Interest in Russian defense industry products remains high. Visitors to the IDEX 2025 exhibition were particularly impressed by the T-90MS, featuringimproved protection against kamikaze drones, modern anti-tank systems, andhand-held anti-tank grenade launchers… Russian weapons undergo much morerigorous fire testing, which facilitates continuous improvement based on combatexperience with high-tech adversaries. For example, during the more than three-year special military operationin Ukraine, numerous modifications were made to discontinued equipment, as wellas to those in serial production (T-90M, etc.). Thus, the states thattraditionally look to Russia for military-technical cooperation are guaranteedto receive combat-tested weapons of the highest class”.
