Naval Group has signed a contract with Sweden’s Ministry of Defence for the delivery of four Defence and Intervention Frigates (FDI) to the Royal Swedish Navy, marking a significant deepening of French-Swedish defense cooperation.
The agreement was formalized in Stockholm on August 31, 2026, with the support of the French government. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, underscoring the strategic weight both nations attach to the deal. Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, signed on behalf of the company, while Mikael Granholm, Director-General of Sweden’s defense procurement agency FMV, signed for Sweden.
“I am delighted to be in Stockholm today to sign the contract for the delivery of four FDI frigates to Sweden, a major milestone in the cooperation between our two countries,” Pommellet said following the signing.
The contract moved from selection announcement to signature in less than four months, a notably fast timeline for a program of this scale. Naval Group has already delivered two FDI frigates, to the French and Hellenic navies respectively, and the first Swedish unit is scheduled for delivery in 2030.
The FDI is a multi-mission frigate built for high-intensity naval operations. It carries a potent anti-air warfare suite built around ASTER missile technology and is designed to operate effectively in demanding maritime environments, including the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic, and the High North, regions of direct strategic relevance to Sweden’s naval posture.
Beyond the vessels themselves, Naval Group has committed to a structured, long-term industrial partnership with Swedish defense companies, including technology transfer and the sharing of naval know-how, laying the groundwork for deeper Franco-Swedish defense-industrial ties in the years ahead.
