Modern warfare is increasingly extending beyond isolated combat zones. For European countries, preparing for conflict is no longer a hypothetical scenario but a practical necessity. Ukraine was the first to face a war in which unmanned systems, thermal surveillance, and precision-guided weapons became the primary tools for detecting and engaging targets. It is here that new technologies are tested daily, and their value is measured not by proving-ground results, but by their ability to save the lives of military personnel.
The widespread use of UAVs has fundamentally transformed the character of combat operations. In 2025 alone, approximately 820,000 drone strikes against various targets were confirmed, with a significant proportion directed against personnel. According to military assessments, up to 80% of frontline tactical reconnaissance is now conducted by UAVs, the majority of which are equipped with thermal imaging systems.

The response to these challenges has been the development of Ukrainian solutions shaped directly by combat experience. STG Defence has developed a comprehensive multispectral camouflage system that provides both individual protection for military personnel and signature management for equipment and fixed positions.
- The Thermal Signature Poncho reduces the probability of personnel detection across the NIR, SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR infrared bands, providing effective concealment at distances starting from 100 metres.
- To protect military equipment and stationary assets, STG Defence has developed the Thermal Signature Equipment Shelter, which reduces the probability of detection of artillery positions, command posts, armoured vehicles, aircraft, and other military assets by thermal imaging systems and radar at distances starting from 500 metres.

From battlefield innovation to a global defence solution
For more than two decades, STG Defence has been developing solutions for the defence sector. During this time, the company has delivered several projects to support Ukraine’s defence and has built extensive practical expertise through close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence. All new developments are validated not only in laboratory conditions but also in real combat environments.
One such solution is the Thermal Signature Poncho, which has completed testing, been assigned a NATO Stock Number, and has been included in the Technical Specifications of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine as a reference sample.
Multispectral camouflage technologies of this level are currently developed by only a limited number of countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Canada, and Ukraine. At the same time, Ukrainian solutions have a key advantage – they are developed and continuously refined based on the experience of a full-scale war.
STG Defence products are manufactured through an international production network. The company uses its own technical specifications and controls every stage of the manufacturing process. The signature management material is supplied from the United States. At the same time, production is carried out by manufacturing partners in several European countries in accordance with unified quality standards and acceptance procedures. Full control over production and logistics ensures consistent performance across all products, regardless of where they are manufactured.

Thermal Signature Poncho: a new level of personal thermal camouflage
The Thermal Signature Poncho is designed to reduce the thermal detectability of military personnel. Rather than simply insulating body heat, it is based on the principle of thermal signature management by minimizing the temperature contrast between the military personnel and the surrounding environment.
The poncho is made from a nylon material with silver. This construction combines infrared reflectivity with controlled thermal energy dissipation. A proprietary coating technology adapts the material’s reflective and emissive properties to different operational environments, including woodland, desert, and snow-covered terrain. As a result, the military’s thermal signature is brought closer to the ambient background temperature, significantly reducing the likelihood of detection by thermal imaging systems.
- The Thermal Signature Poncho provides effective signature reduction across the NIR, SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR infrared bands.
- The material generates minimal noise during movement, helping maintain concealment during operations in proximity to the enemy.
- Weighing just 880 grams, the poncho adds minimal load to the military personnel’s equipment.
- It folds into a compact package for easy transport and can be quickly attached to standard combat gear.
- The highly durable material retains its operational performance after up to 50 washing cycles.
- The poncho is compatible with all camouflage patterns and additional surface treatments.
- Its protective performance remains effective for at least four hours of continuous use.
The Thermal Signature Poncho is designed for units whose missions depend on maintaining a low observable signature. It is particularly suited for reconnaissance teams, special operations forces, sniper units, and UAV operators, for whom minimizing the probability of detection is a critical factor in mission success.
A unified multispectral camouflage ecosystem from STG Defence
A separate element of the STG Defence product line is the Thermal Signature Equipment Shelter, designed to reduce the probability of detection of military equipment and stationary objects. They are based on the same principles of thermal signature management as individual camouflage solutions but are adapted for larger-scale targets. The shelters can be used to conceal all-terrain vehicles, armored personnel carriers, tanks, forward command posts, aircraft, and other military equipment. Thanks to their low weight and modular design, they can be rapidly deployed and easily adapted to objects of different sizes.
The STG Defence concept is based on the creation of an integrated multispectral camouflage system in which each element complements the others. Individual equipment, camouflage solutions for vehicles, and specialized shelters operate as a unified complex, providing multilayered reduction of unit detectability. This approach enables effective concealment of both individual service members and combat positions, equipment, or other military assets from modern enemy reconnaissance systems.
Ukrainian defence solutions shaped by the experience of war
The development of solutions such as the anti-thermal imaging poncho reflects fundamental changes in Ukraine’s defence sector. Ukrainian developers are increasingly not only adapting existing technologies but also creating their own engineering solutions shaped by the practical needs of military units.
Amid growing security risks in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region, the role of concealment technologies is becoming increasingly important. Future conflict scenarios involve the widespread use of reconnaissance drones, thermal imaging systems, and precision-guided weapons. Under such conditions, a unit’s ability to reduce its detectability across different detection spectra directly affects its survivability and mission effectiveness.
STG Defence solutions demonstrate how Ukrainian defence technologies, developed under wartime conditions, can address the challenges of the modern battlefield. The speed of development, practical focus, and incorporation of real operational experience make such systems an important element of a new protection concept. In modern warfare, the advantage belongs not only to those who possess greater firepower but also to those whom the enemy cannot detect in time.
