Lockheed Martin has announced a multimillion-dollar investment to develop a Modular Payload Delivery System (MPDS), an initiative aimed at transforming the company’s proven hypersonic missile body technologies into a flexible family of weapon systems capable of supporting both offensive and defensive missions.
In today’s threat environment, speed to capability is the most valuable attribute for enabling the Department of War’s “Arsenal of Freedom” and delivering on munitions acceleration goals. That speed is seen as critical to scaling hypersonic capability and transitioning new alternative payloads into warfighter capability faster than has historically been possible.
One Airframe, Multiple Missions
MPDS re-architects key hypersonic technologies within a modular framework, allowing the Department of War and industry partners to integrate diverse payloads with minimal impact on the overall system. This approach lets a single hypersonic airframe scale for deep, long-range strike missions, carry larger payloads for missions requiring less range, or be adapted for missile defense applications — all while cutting the time and development costs traditionally required to field new capabilities.
“Our Modular Delivery System reflects our commitment to listening to our customers and delivering innovative solutions that meet evolving mission requirements,” said Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager of Strategic and Missile Defense Systems. “By investing in a modular payload delivery system built upon our proven hypersonic technologies and legacy, we’re expanding operational utility, delivering affordability and accelerating advanced capabilities that would be historically burdened by development timelines and challenges.”
Affordability and Scale
Built upon flight-tested, proven hypersonic technologies, the cross-domain MPDS leverages a robust industrial base. Achieving mission success at an affordable price requires pairing qualified designs with smart manufacturing — and MPDS’s modular design is intended to drastically reduce the non-recurring engineering time and expense required to integrate new hypersonic payloads. By streamlining assembly, integration, and testing, and leveraging automation to cut labor hours, the production model is designed to speed up delivery timelines while maximizing the value of an existing airframe capability. Lockheed Martin says it stands ready to partner across government, industry, and academia to accelerate the integration of MPDS with other advanced capabilities.
Why It Matters
Lockheed Martin’s investment in MPDS underscores its commitment to developing scalable hypersonic solutions in support of the Department of War’s Scaled Hypersonics Critical Technology Area and the broader munitions acceleration initiative. The company frames the capability as part of its wider effort to deliver discriminating technologies that accelerate warfighter capability under the Department of War’s “Arsenal of Freedom” push.
