Hyundai Rotem, the defense arm of Hyundai Motor Group, has officially unveiled the Middle East variant of its K2 main battle tank during a rollout ceremony held at the company’s factory in Changwon, located approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
The K2ME is an export model developed in cooperation with industrial partners and designed specifically to operate with high efficiency in extreme hot environments, withstanding temperatures of up to 50°C. Technical improvements include a redesigned radiator for the powertrain, as well as a dedicated auxiliary cooling system for the turret.
On the supply chain front, Hyundai Rotem announced its intention to raise the proportion of locally manufactured components to approximately 90%, a strategic move aimed at bypassing export restrictions previously imposed by dependence on certain foreign parts.
In this context, CEO Lee Young-bae confirmed that this project comes at a particularly sensitive phase of global security shifts, noting that its outcomes will contribute to strengthening South Korea’s defense industry competitiveness on the international stage.
