Sharjah’s Department of eGovernment (DeG) has announced that it is hosting a workshop to bring together 30 of the emirate’s departments as part of the forthcoming GITEX Technology Week 2016 (GITEX). Taking place on September 1, the activity being held under the umbrella of the Government of Sharjah is being organised to review its preparations for the Gulf region’s foremost technology exhibition.

Headed by Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Director General of DeG, the workshop will see the participation of Sharjah government department representatives who will exchange information about their respective roles at GITEX. DeG will be using the event to outline its running of the exhibition’s Government of Sharjah’s pavilion, which will see it see it disseminating details of the infrastructure and services it manages to meet the shift to smart government in Sharjah.

“Thanks to the vision and directives of our wise leadership, Sharjah has been able to achieve excellence in the field of digital and smart government services. DeG has organised this interactive workshop to inform local departments about the plans and activities to be implemented at the Government of Sharjah’s pavilion during GITEX. This important awareness activity comes under our remit to implement unified digital and smart services throughout the Emirate of Sharjah,” said Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi.

“The workshop will feature a presentation about DeG’s participation at GITEX and provide details of our latest applications for Sharjah, which will be launched during the exhibition. These include digital links between government departments to increase connectivity and improve the flow of information, and high level cyber-security systems to effectively protect and secure data during storage, retrieval and transmission,” he added.

Al Qasimi reiterated the importance of DeG’s participation at GITEX, especially in light of the expectation that IT spending in the Middle East will reach US $212.9 billion (approx. AED 782 billion) in 2019, an increase of 3.7 per cent compared to 2015. He highlighted that as the region’s largest technology exhibition, the annual GITEX Technology Week plays an important role in delivering this growth.

GITEX Technology Week 2016 takes place from October 16-20 at Dubai World Trade Centre. Featuring the participation of 4,200 exhibitors from 144 countries, 22,000 senior technology executives and some 150,000 visitors, the event is a major platform for companies to launch their newest products and latest innovations in the ICT domain.

GITEX is the gateway for major brands to the Middle East, one of the fastest emerging markets in the field of information and communication technology and an increasing region for investment. Established for over three decades, the exhibition draws more than 1,000 media representatives from across the world.
