BAE Systems has signed on the 21st of July an agreement to provide high-tech engineering expertise to Land Rover BAR’s Technical Innovation Group (TIG), in support of the team’s bid to bring the America’s Cup back to the UK in 2017.
The Company’s UK based engineers will work to improve the performance of the racing team by adapting solutions normally used in the defence and aerospace sectors. As part of Land Rover BAR’s world class, multidisciplinary research and development Technical Innovation Group – powered by PA Consulting -, BAE Systems will provide the best of British high-tech engineering to support the existing design team to give a competitive advantage to the racing. The agreement between BAE Systems and Land Rover BAR runs to December 2017.
Nigel Whitehead, Group Managing Director Programmes & Support, BAE Systems, said: “How successful you are in sport often comes down to tiny margins. I am delighted that BAE Systems is able to share capabilities gained from the design and construction of some of the most innovative and technologically advanced defence products, including the Typhoon aircraft and Type 45 and Type 26 naval ships to optimise the sporting performance of the Land Rover BAR team.
“Portsmouth will benefit hugely from the addition of Sir Ben’s racing team which will further demonstrate the strong maritime industry and focus on engineering and technology that the region enjoys. BAE Systems has a long term commitment to Portsmouth and I’m proud that we’ll be able to work collaboratively with Land Rover BAR to raise the aspirations of young people who could one day become our future engineers.”
Martin Whitmarsh, Chief Executive Officer, Land Rover BAR said: “We’re very happy to welcome BAE Systems to our Technical Innovation Group. I began my career with the company, and I know that they will bring a significant and important technical and engineering capacity to the team.”
Since establishing a team headquarters in Portsmouth, Land Rover BAR has been committed to the education of young people. The team shares an interest with BAE Systems to increase aspirations and attainment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) amongst young people. BAE Systems will further support the team by funding an interactive exhibition space at the new team headquarters for use by schools in the region to boost their access to STEM resources.
