New Developments in Loitering Munition Advancement in Greece.. SAS Raises the Bar in Greek Defence Technology

Spirit Aeronautical Systems (SAS) continues to play a leading role in the field of advanced Loitering Munitions, presenting significant technological developments that strengthen the Greek defence industry and highlight domestic know‑how at an international level.

Current Developments – The Leap with AIHMI 2XR (AHM 2XR)

Following extensive testing in Greece and abroad, SAS has completed the first full configuration of the AIHMI 2XR (AHM 2XR) Stand‑Off Loitering Munition (SOLM), a system that integrates cutting‑edge technologies and sets new standards in accuracy and operational effectiveness.

The reference configuration includes:

  • Laser Guided Rocket (LGR) 2.75” by Thales BE, offering high‑precision target engagement.
  • Fiber Optic (FO) telemetry and image transmission, ensuring zero interference and maximum reliability.
  • ELRS backup telemetry system, providing operational continuity.
  • GNSS Denial self‑protection system, critical in modern electronic warfare environments.
  • TALPS (Tactical Laser Guided Precision Strike) software, solving the rocket’s ballistic equations dozens of times per second, dynamically optimizing platform positioning and dramatically increasing strike accuracy.

Testing of the AHM 2XR (MTOW 25 kg, wingspan 2.34 m) was conducted through release from the UCAV SARISA II, confirming full compatibility and operational maturity of the system.

These trials focused on an in‑depth evaluation of flight behaviour, control and communications architecture, and mission execution processes, confirming that the platform fully meets the demands of modern operational scenarios. In parallel, the AHM 2XR configuration – designed for the integration of a 70 mm Laser Guided Rocket as a precision effector – was tested under real conditions, significantly enhancing the system’s accuracy and effectiveness.

The results of this phase not only validated the technical robustness of the programme but also highlighted the steady technological trajectory that began with AHM 1X in 2023 and was further strengthened with AHM 2X in 2024. This systematic evolution has now shaped a complete SOLM family with European recognition, as SAS distinguished itself in the European Defence Agency (EDA) evaluation process, securing a position among the top five proposals in Europe – a distinction that confirms both the technological superiority and competitiveness of the Greek defence industry.

Next Steps – Two New Variants and Two New SOLM Families

SAS R&D is working intensively on the development of two new variants of the core platform:

1. AHM 2XW 1

With:

  • Shaped charge warhead 6–10 kg
  • Optical Targeting & Navigation
  • RF telemetry with antijamming (Frequency Hopping)
  • GNSS Denial self‑protection system

2. AHM 2XW 2

With:

  • Shaped charge warhead 6–10 kg
  • Integrated Laser Seeker
  • RF telemetry with antijamming (Frequency Hopping)
  • GNSS Denial self‑protection system

In parallel, SAS is developing Ground Launching solutions, creating two complete AIHMI product families:

  • Air Launched Effector (ALE)
  • Air / Ground Launched Effector (AGLE)

In total, six SOLM AIHMI variants will form part of a broader operational ecosystem, offering end‑users a wide range of options, high adaptability, and configuration flexibility according to their operational doctrine.

Enhanced Flexibility – New Release Carriers and Swarming

To further expand the operational use of AIHMI 2X, SAS is developing:

  • A release pylon for combat helicopters
  • A multi‑rack carrier for AHM 2X, suitable for internal installation in transport helicopters and free release via a dedicated slide mechanism

Additionally, AIHMI 2X Swarming software is currently in testing, enabling cooperative action among multiple munitions and significantly increasing operational effectiveness and flexibility.

Design Philosophy – Greek Technology with International Standards

SAS designs with a focus on:

  • Usability and ease of integration
  • Multi‑configuration capability on the same platform
  • Low acquisition cost
  • Compatibility with national and NATO standards

The SOLM AIHMI 2X is part of the broader ecosystem built around the UCAV SARISA II, which includes:

  • ARGUS (AI Assisted Reconnaissance, Guidance & Unified Strike)
  • STOCHOS AI Assisted ISTAR & Targeting system
  • COMS (Common Operations Management System)
  • TALPS precision targeting software
  • THEOS Fixed Wing VTOL UAV
  • MPGS 3 ground station

Together, these systems create a unified F2T2EA network‑centric environment, where the collection, processing, distribution, and exploitation of operational information are conducted in a manner that meets the demands of modern operations.
