France held the largest military parade in the history of its national holiday on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in a display carrying unmistakable political weight: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended as guest of honor at a moment when European rearmament is accelerating in response to Russia’s war on Ukraine. The parade, overseen by President Emmanuel Macron for the final time before he leaves office in 2027 after two consecutive terms, was widely read as a symbolic message to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump that Europe is united and prepared to defend itself.
According to the Paris military governor, nearly 7,600 personnel took part this year, up from 5,810 in 2025, a new record for the number of participants. Other Western media reports cited complementary figures of roughly 6,700 troops, 98 aircraft, 31 helicopters and 315 vehicles moving along the traditional route between the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde. Around 500 soldiers from the so-called “Coalition of the Willing,” a grouping made up primarily of European nations backing Kyiv, also took part, offering a further symbolic marker of European unity.
Zelensky received a warm welcome from the assembled European leaders upon his arrival, while Ukrainian troops drew the loudest applause from crowds lining the Champs-Élysées. Notably, Ukrainian pilots trained in France flew aboard two Mirage 2000B jets alongside French air crews, a scene that put France-Ukraine military cooperation on visible display. Around thirty heads of state and government attended, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose country’s troops marched for the first time in about twenty years. Aircraft from several European nations also took part, including Germany, Britain, Croatia, Poland, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Spain and Italy.
The parade came a day after Macron hosted a summit of Ukraine’s allies, roughly four and a half years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor. In remarks, the French president stressed that peace remained his country’s goal, while affirming France’s readiness to defend freedom and the rule of law “even at the cost of blood” if necessary. Deputy Defence Minister Alice Rufo, speaking to RTL radio, described the event as an expression of a united, self-confident Europe standing with Ukraine against Russia.
The parade also showcased the operational transformation underway in the French Army under the SCORPION modernization program, aimed at building a digitally connected, rapidly deployable land force suited to high-intensity warfare. The Griffon armored vehicle, equipped with the SICS combat information system, served as the digital backbone of this transformation, enabling real-time battlefield information-sharing across units, while the Jaguar armored reconnaissance vehicle represented the modernization of French reconnaissance capability. The VL MICA and SAMP/T air defense systems also featured in the parade, alongside S-100 naval drones operated by Naval Aviation Flotilla 36F, underscoring France’s growing emphasis on air defense and counter-drone capability, a priority reinforced by lessons drawn from the war in Ukraine.
This year’s national holiday coincided with forest fires raging in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris and in parts of southern France, amid a third heatwave of the year that triggered a red alert, prompting authorities in several regions, including the capital, to cancel traditional fireworks displays and firefighters’ balls. The Eiffel Tower fireworks and drone show nonetheless went ahead as planned on Monday evening, featuring a drone formation shaped like the Statue of Liberty, a nod to the gift France sent to the United States that arrived in New York in 1885. The occasion also fell on the tenth anniversary of the Nice attack, when a truck plowed into crowds leaving a Bastille Day fireworks display in the southern city on July 14, 2016, killing 86 people and injuring more than 400 others.
The parade comes nine years after Macron, in the early months of his first term, hosted President Donald Trump as guest of honor at the 2017 Bastille Day parade, a visit reportedly credited with later inspiring Trump to stage his own military parade in Washington.
