As Australian Prime Contractor for the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Program, BAE Systems is delighted that HMAS CANBERRA, the largest ship ever built for the Royal Australian Navy, will be centre stage at this weekend’s Australia Day celebrations in Sydney. Director Maritime Bill Saltzer said that it was a tremendous occasion for the ship and her officers and crew to have such a high profile position in an event to celebrate our national day.
HMAS Canberra, is one of two Landing Helicopter Dock ships being produced for the Royal Australian Navy under the LHD Program, and was delivered at the Williamstown (Victoria) Shipyard in September last year. BAE Systems is also the Australian Prime Contractor for the In Service Support of both LHDs with teams in both Sydney and Williamstown helping to ready the ship for Australia Day.
“Not only will it be a proud moment for all on board, but also for all of our highly capable shipbuilders who have been working hard over the past several years building and supporting the 27,000 tonne vessel,” Mr Saltzer said.
“Many of our employees across Australia will be watching the Australia Day celebration with a special appreciation of the role that we play in service to the nation.”
“HMAS Canberra is one of the most complex warships ever built requiring a highly skilled workforce of tradespeople, engineers, project management and sustainment staff.”
