In a move to address the surging global demand for affordable counter-drone technology, BAE Systems has successfully completed the first test firing of a low-cost precision weapon from a Eurofighter Typhoon.
The trial, conducted at a UK military testing range, utilized the APKWS® (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) laser-guidance kit. Launched from a Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon test aircraft based out of Warton, the weapon successfully neutralized a ground-based target, marking a significant milestone in the aircraft’s evolving mission profile.
A “Game-Changing” Shift in Aerial Defense
As uncrewed air systems (UAS) become increasingly prevalent on the modern battlefield, air forces are seeking “asymmetric” solutions—weapons that don’t cost millions of dollars to down a relatively inexpensive drone.
The APKWS kit, manufactured by BAE Systems in the U.S., transforms standard unguided rockets into precision-guided munitions. This provides a bridge between unguided rockets and high-end missiles like the Brimstone or Meteor, offering a surgical strike capability at a fraction of the cost.
“This trial demonstrates a game-changing capability and a cost-effective solution that would enhance Typhoon’s already impressive range of weapons,” said Richard Hamilton, Managing Director of Air Operations at BAE Systems.
Strategic Integration and Future Testing
The integration of the APKWS is part of a broader suite of planned enhancements for the Eurofighter Typhoon, intended to maintain its edge in European and Middle Eastern air fleets. Key highlights of the program include:
- Counter-UAS Focus: Providing an “affordable interception” option to preserve high-value missile stocks.
- Multi-Platform Provenance: While new to the Typhoon, the APKWS is already combat-proven on platforms like the F-16, A-10, and various rotary-wing aircraft.
- Mission Versatility: The system is designed for both air-to-surface and air-to-air engagements.
What’s Next?
The success of this ground-strike trial has cleared the flight path for the next phase of development. BAE Systems and the RAF are now preparing for air-to-air target testing, which will specifically evaluate the Typhoon’s ability to intercept maneuvering drones and other low-cost aerial threats in real-time combat scenarios.
By diversifying the Typhoon’s arsenal, the MoD aims to ensure the UK’s sovereign combat air capability remains potent against the evolving backdrop of cheap, attritable drone warfare.
