The U.S. State Department has greenlighted a possible Foreign Military Sale of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) to Canada, a deal valued at an estimated $160 million.
The sale, which still requires congressional approval, would provide Canada with up to 60 JLTVs and nine cargo trailers. The comprehensive package includes everything from communications systems and spare parts to training and logistics support.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that the acquisition would bolster U.S. foreign policy objectives by enhancing the capabilities of a key NATO ally. The new vehicles will strengthen Canada’s ability to conduct military, peacekeeping, and humanitarian operations, allowing it to better respond to threats and contribute to allied security efforts worldwide.
AM General, LLC will serve as the primary contractor. The program is projected to take up to six years, during which U.S. staff and contractors will assist with training and fielding the new vehicles. Once integrated, the JLTVs will improve the Canadian Armed Forces’ tactical mobility and provide better protection for troops during missions at home and abroad.
