MBDA has revealed a new one-way effector drone designed to provoke and expose enemy air defenses for subsequent strikes. Showcased at the 2025 Paris Air Show, this innovative drone is engineered to be a crucial component in modern long-range strike operations.
The drone carries a 40-kilogram (88-pound) warhead, a size specifically chosen to force enemy defense systems to engage and destroy it. Powered by a jet engine, it boasts a range of 500 kilometers (311 miles), enabling it to penetrate deep into hostile territory. Built to be launched in salvos, the effector’s primary goal is to reveal the positions of enemy systems and disrupt their layered defenses.
MBDA stated, “The new effector is intended to force even the most sophisticated air defenses to reveal themselves, making them easier to detect and neutralize, in conjunction with other long-range strike systems.”
Mass Production and Battlefield Lessons from Ukraine
This new saturation drone directly incorporates lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, where the widespread use of low-cost drones has become a pivotal aspect of high-intensity warfare.
To achieve mass production, MBDA is collaborating with drone and automotive manufacturers. This strategic partnership leverages civilian supply chains and industrial methods to rapidly scale up production, a significant departure from traditional, often slower, weapons manufacturing processes. This shift allows for quick, high-volume output to meet urgent operational demands.
MBDA announced that this new production model could deliver up to 1,000 effectors per month. “MBDA has already demonstrated its ability to scale up, and continues to adapt through the development of new effectors that meet the need for mass, thanks to unique partnerships with civilian industry,” said MBDA CEO Eric Beranger.
Flight testing for the new effector drone is slated to begin this autumn, with initial production deliveries anticipated by 2027.
