General Atomics AeroTec Revives the Do228 NXT: An Exclusive Interview with CEO Harald Robl

In an era where mission flexibility and operational efficiency define the future of aviation, few aircraft have stood the test of time like the Dornier 228.

To explore the exciting revival of this iconic platform, Defense Arabia sat down with Mr. Harald Robl, CEO of General Atomics AeroTec Systems. Under his leadership, the company is reintroducing the Do228 in a modernized form—the Do228 NXT—a multi-role aircraft designed to meet the dynamic demands of both civilian and military operators around the world.

In this exclusive interview, Mr. Robl shares insights into the aircraft’s unique versatility, the motivation behind its relaunch, and the strategic vision driving AeroTec Systems into the future.

What strategic needs or market demands led to the development of the Do228 NXT?

Harald Robl: Aircraft usually have a specific application in which they are very good, such as passenger transportation, medical evacuations or maritime surveillance. The Do228, on the other hand, is an airplane that is capable of performing the most versatile missions. A true multi-role aircraft. That is why we have decided to revive the Do228 program. The aircraft has been in successful operation worldwide for over 40 years for various mission. Now, we launch a new and modernized version – the Do228 NXT.

How does the Do228 NXT reflect General Atomics AeroTec Systems’ broader vision for the future of special mission and regional transport aircraft?

Harald Robl: Our vision is to provide customers with a flexible aircraft. One that fulfills multiple functions, one that can approach many airports and one that can be easily converted or modified. And the Do228 NXT is the ideal platform for this.

Can you walk us through the key technical upgrades in the Do228 NXT compared to the previous Do228 NG version?

Harald Robl: Many technical innovations and optimizations were implemented for the series production of the Do228 NXT, but also design changes like a completely new interior design. New features include modern LED lights in the cabin, the installation of a new electric air conditioning system and a new AHRS (Attitude and Heading Reference System), among others.

What are the main performance improvements resulting from the integration of modern systems such as the new AHRS, electric air conditioning, and LED lighting?

Harald Robl: Our optimizations have many advantages. For pilots, it makes flying with the Do228 NXT even easier, and for passengers, it increases travel comfort even further.

How do the design changes improve operational efficiency or mission adaptability for end users?

Harald Robl: It is essential for GA-ATS to preserve the proven basic characteristics of the aircraftthese are precisely what make it so popular around the world. At the same time, we are committed to continuously modernizing and improving the aircraft. Our goal is to enhance its capabilities while also reducing operational costs for our customers. This balance between innovation and reliability is what defines our approach. The recent upgrades contribute to both objectives, offering better efficiency and an even more user-friendly experience.

You’ve relocated most of the manufacturing in-house to Germany—what are the main benefits of this shift for production quality and delivery timelines?

Harald Robl: In the current geopolitical situation, supply chains are particularly vulnerable. We want make our supply chain as secure and reliable as possible. This means that most of the production has been moved to our site in Germany and that almost all components are also manufactured in Europe or Germany. This guarantees the highest product quality of the Do228 NXT and a strong supply chain. What challenges did you face during the transition to the new production model, and how were they overcome?

Harald Robl: Setting up your own modern production line is a major effort, both in terms of time and money. But it is also a big signal that our company is standing fully behind the aircraft.

Could you share more details about the current production status of the Do228 NXT? When is the rollout of the first aircraft expected?

Harald Robl: Following the successful start of the production of individual components for the Do228 NXT in 2024 – for example the wings are manufactured by us – final assembly of the first Do228 NXT has now also begun this year. Our schedule is to have the first Do228 NXT ready by the end of this year.

Have any launch customers or partner organizations been announced yet?

Harald Robl: The first Do228 NXT is used by our company as a demonstrator aircraft to present it to customers and at trade fairs. We also want to use it as a test platform for further developments. We are already in good talks with various interested customers for Do228 NXT aircraft from series production.

Which types of customers or missions are you primarily targeting with the Do228 NXT—civil, military, or both?

Harald Robl: We address civilian as well as military and law enforcement operators. For civilian customers, the Do228 NXT is interesting for the transportation of passengers or cargo, as well as for research flights or medevac. For military customers, the Do228 NXT serves as a special mission platform, for example for maritime patrol, paratrooper deployment or environmental monitoring.

Do you see increased demand in certain regions such as the Middle East & Africa?

Harald Robl: There is a global demand for the Do228 NXT. This includes, for example, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The ability of our aircraft to take off and land on unpaved runways is of particular interest here. In these regions this applies to many airfields and allows operators much greater mission flexibility.

How has the aircraft’s weight reduction and component optimization contributed to sustainability or fuel efficiency?

Harald Robl: In general, we always strive to achieve weight reduction in components during modernization efforts. Reducing the aircraft’s weight directly decreases the amount of thrust required during flights, which lowers fuel consumption. This is particularly advantageous for missions that demand long endurance or involve frequent takeoffs and landings, such as maritime patrol or surveillance operations.

In what ways have modern production techniques improved overall lifecycle costs for operators?

Harald Robl: It’s not just about adopting new production techniques—at the end of the day, an aircraft is still a metal aircraft. But by bringing manufacturing back in-house and relocating all assembly steps to Europe, we gain much greater control over quality. And that improved quality control ultimately translates into lower overall costs. Looking ahead, are there plans to offer additional variants of the Do228 NXT, such as those tailored for ISR, maritime patrol, or humanitarian missions?

Harald Robl: The Do228 NXT is the platform that provides the basis. The specialization comes from the cabin layout. Here we can realize the most varied requests, according to the customer’s wishes. If a customer wants to transport people, we build a cabin with 19 seats or with 18 seats and a toilet. If a customer needs an aircraft for maritime patrols, we equip it with operator consoles and install many state-of-the-art sensors. This means that there are different versions of the Do228 NXT – depending on the customer’s requirements. The possibilities are even greater. There are also variants for cargo transport, medical evacuations, paratrooper deployment, VIP transport and many more. We are always excited to incorporate new customer requests, whether they relate to cabin layout or special mission configurations. The Do228 is an exceptionally versatile platform, ideally suited for a wide range of operational scenarios. Its adaptability allows us to tailor the aircraft precisely to the mission needs of our clients, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.

How do you see the Do228 NXT positioning itself in the global aerospace market over the next 510 years?

Harald Robl: We see a demand for the Do228 NXT in many different places. We want to close an important gap in the aviation market with our new aircraft and offer customers the most versatile aircraft.
