BAE Systems has long been at the forefront of defense innovation, delivering cutting-edge solutions tailored to the unique requirements of its global clients. With decades of experience in the Middle East, the company continues to adapt its strategies to align with evolving defense landscapes, ensuring its technologies remain relevant and effective.
In this exclusive interview, Kirk Mulins, Program Director at BAE Systems, Inc., shares insights into the company’s approach to customization for Middle Eastern clients, advancements in cybersecurity and autonomous systems, and the strategic opportunities presented by the introduction of the Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) at IDEX. He also discusses the company’s vision for future defense technologies and the importance of strong local partnerships in driving regional success.
Cybersecurity and autonomous systems are becoming increasingly vital in modern defense strategies. How does BAE Systems plan to expand its role in these domains?
BAE Systems is aggressively exploring ways to integrate advanced technology into our defense solutions. This includes continuous improvements in cybersecurity and autonomous systems. Our approach is holistic, meaning we are not limiting advancements to a single vehicle or region—we are looking at the bigger picture. We recognize that these critical technologies will play a major role in future warfare, and we are committed to enhancing our capabilities to meet these emerging challenges.
How do you see BAE Systems contributing to the UAE’s future defense capabilities, particularly as the nation invests in next-generation platforms?
When it comes to the ACV (Amphibious Combat Vehicle), we are extremely proud of what we have developed. It is a highly capable and robust platform designed to meet demanding requirements.
The introduction of the ACV at IDEX marks a significant milestone. What strategic opportunities does BAE Systems see for this product in the Middle Eastern market, particularly for coastal defense?
We know that the UAE is interested in discussing 8×8 capabilities in this category. To be completely transparent, its amphibious capability is unmatched worldwide for an armored combat vehicle. If given the opportunity to demonstrate its performance, whether for the UAE or other regional partners, we are confident that the ACV will exceed expectations.
BAE Systems has emphasized partnerships. What factors are crucial when selecting local partners?
It would be premature to provide a definitive answer at this stage. However, we recognize that industrialization and local content are key priorities for our customers in the UAE and beyond. As a result, we actively explore ways to integrate local industry into our operations, ensuring that our partnerships align with our customers’ strategic goals.
Looking ahead, what emerging defense trends or technologies do you anticipate will shape BAE Systems’ focus in the Middle East?
As mentioned earlier, we continue to invest in critical technologies that we believe are essential for modern warfare, benefiting both U.S. forces and international allies. AI is an area of growing importance, and while we are still in the process of understanding the UAE’s specific requirements in this field, we are confident that once those needs are clearly defined, we will be able to provide tailored solutions that align with their objectives.
