Egyptian Navy Launches Final 85-Ton ASD Tugboat, Marking Milestone in Local Shipbuilding Industry

In line with the directives of the political leadership and the commitment of the Egyptian Armed Forces’ General Command to enhance the localization of national industries and develop armament capabilities across various fields, Vice Admiral Ashraf Atwa, Commander of the Egyptian Navy and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Maritime Industries and Services Organization, presided over the launching ceremony of the third and final ASD-class tugboat with a towing capacity of 85 tons.

The tugboat was constructed at Alexandria Shipyard in collaboration with the French classification society Bureau Veritas (BV), as part of a partnership agreement between the Navy and Alexandria Shipyard.

The ceremony was attended by Rear Admiral Engineer Hossam El-Din Ezzat, Chairman of Alexandria Shipyard, along with several Navy leaders and representatives from Bureau Veritas.

Additionally, the Commander of the Egyptian Navy inaugurated the northern slipway gate designated for the new tugboat. The vessel has a load capacity of up to 800 tons, a length of 32 meters, a width of 13.5 meters, and a draft of 6.5 meters, with a total weight exceeding 120 tons. All design and construction work for the gate was carried out by engineers and technicians at Alexandria Shipyard.

It is worth noting that the first tugboat, Ras El Hikma, is scheduled to join the naval fleet before the end of 2024. Additional units of this model are currently under construction for export, marking the initial products of a new production line inaugurated by Alexandria Shipyard in collaboration with the Canadian design office Robert Allan Ltd., to manufacture this advanced type of tugboat for the first time in Egyptian shipyards.
