South Korean defense giant Hanwha Aerospace has secured a contract with Malaysia’s Cendana Auto to modernize the Malaysian Army’s fleet of K200 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

The agreement will initially involve upgrading a prototype vehicle, with subsequent modifications to be implemented across the entire fleet. Malaysia has operated a total of 111 K200 IFVs for over three decades, as well as a later batch of upgraded K200A1 variants equipped with an enhanced engine, reinforced armor, and NBC protection.

“This contract reinforces Hanwha Aerospace’s position as a global defense leader, encompassing the entire spectrum of the defense industry, from R&D and manufacturing to maintenance and support services,” the company stated.

Building a Local Defense Industry

Malaysian partner Cendana Auto highlighted the contract’s role in developing the local armored vehicle MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) sector, aiming to establish Malaysia as a regional MRO hub. The collaboration is also expected to foster the growth of the domestic defense industry and create opportunities for young Malaysians to acquire expertise in defense technology and engineering.

K200 Infantry Fighting Vehicle

The 13-ton K200 IFV is capable of transporting nine infantry soldiers and three crew members while providing fire support through its integrated weapon systems. Armed with an M2 machine gun as its primary weapon and an M60 or K12 machine gun as secondary armament, the vehicle can be further equipped with remote-controlled weapon stations in upgraded models. Powered by a MAN-Doosan D2848T 350-horsepower engine, it boasts a range of 450 kilometers and a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour.
