Thales Launches New Compact Movable Roadside Equipment

At the ITS World Congress, Thales is launching the new MoRSE (Movable RoadSide Equipment) terminal for road management.

This unique, state-of-the-art solution performs a full range of roadside checkpoint functions required for road management by transport authorities and regions, providing a detailed report on every vehicle that passes. Installed right at the roadside, the MoRSE terminal records data that can be used for free flow toll collection, traffic analysis, and potentially speed control, or a combination of the three.

The new equipment meets the growing need to provide road transport systems with large numbers of roadside devices in a context of severe budget constraints.

MoRSE technology is an alternative to gantry-based free-flow toll collection solutions via gates. Drawing on extensive research and development, Thales has successfully combined all the necessary technologies (license plate recognition, vehicle classification and DSRC) within a single compact terminal with built-in processing and supervision software. The product offers important benefits including optimised cost, easy installation and maintenance, movability and low visual impact.

Thales has more than 35 years’ experience in road system design encompassing electronic toll collection, free-flow toll collection and urban traffic management, as well as operating advanced test facilities including a fully upgraded test track in the Paris Region. Today, the company offers motorway and road transport operators state-of-the-art solutions and technologies to improve traffic flows, network safety and security and enhance road users’ perception of toll systems. Examples of successful Thales projects in the sector include free-flow toll collection for Queensland Motorways (Australia), road toll collection in Mexico City, road traffic management in Strasbourg, traffic regulation of the Seine Saint Denis department and the UK’s national road traffic information system.
