The United States has given the green light for a potential Foreign Military Sale to Saudi Arabia, involving MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes along with associated logistical and program support. The deal is estimated at $78.5 million, according to a recent announcement from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which notified Congress of the proposed transaction on January 3, 2025.
Saudi Arabia’s request includes 20 MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes (LWT) fully assembled, as well as related equipment such as spare parts, recoverable exercise torpedoes (REXTORP), handling shapes, containers, training services, publications, and testing tools. The package also includes engineering, technical, and logistical support provided by both the U.S. government and contractors.
This sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security interests by strengthening a key regional ally that contributes to political stability and economic development in the Gulf. Enhancing Saudi Arabia’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities will bolster its ability to counter current and emerging threats. The country is expected to integrate the new equipment smoothly into its defense infrastructure.
The agreement will not disrupt the military balance in the region. RTX Integrated Defense Systems of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has been identified as the primary contractor, with no offset arrangements planned. Additionally, the deal will require temporary visits from up to two U.S. government or contractor representatives for technical assistance and oversight.
The potential sale will have no negative impact on U.S. military readiness. The total cost reflects maximum estimates, with final values subject to adjustments based on specific needs, funding availability, and finalized agreements.
