In a bid to become a key player in the British Army’s efforts to upgrade its land vehicle fleet, defense company KNDS is proposing its Dingo 3 armored personnel carrier. They are offering both a smaller, more agile 4×4 version and a larger 6×6 model designed for troop transport.
The British Army’s Land Mobility Program is looking for modern vehicles that can offer both strong protection and excellent movement capabilities for their soldiers. KNDS believes the Dingo 3 fits this bill, highlighting its extensive real-world use with over a thousand vehicles currently serving in ten different countries, including in tough environments like Afghanistan and Ukraine. This experience, they say, proves its reliability.
The Dingo 3 is the latest version of a well-established vehicle and boasts improvements in how much it can carry, its performance, and its level of protection. It’s built on the dependable Mercedes-Benz Unimog chassis, which is known for its ability to handle difficult terrain – a crucial factor for the British Army.
The smaller 4×4 Dingo 3 is designed to be a good balance of size and power, capable of carrying a significant amount of equipment and personnel while being powered by a strong diesel engine. It features advanced safety measures, including robust armor against various threats like mines and bombs, and even has protection against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) attacks. Its design allows for different configurations to suit various roles, such as a command center or an ambulance.
The larger 6×6 Dingo 3 focuses on transporting troops and offers even more interior space and protection. It uses a similar powerful engine and is already in service with several other European countries. Like the 4×4 version, it can be adapted for different missions and offers strong defense against a range of threats.
If the British Army chooses the Dingo 3, KNDS intends to build and support the vehicles within the UK. This move aims to create jobs and strengthen partnerships within the British defense industry, potentially mirroring the existing cooperation between the UK and Germany on other projects like the Boxer vehicle.
Ultimately, the British Army’s Land Mobility Program is about equipping its forces with the best possible protected vehicles to meet modern threats and work effectively with allies. KNDS is just one of several companies vying for this important contract, with others like Rheinmetall/BAE Systems and General Dynamics also offering their solutions.
