In a significant development reflecting the depth of strategic relations between Algeria and Russia, well-informed sources reported on March 13, 2025, that the Algerian Air Force has commenced operations with advanced Su-35 fighter jets from the “Oum El Bouaghi” airbase. This announcement confirms earlier reports indicating that Algeria would become one of the few nations operating this distinguished Russian fighter jet.
Commenting on the event, Ali Al-Hashem, an expert in military and strategic affairs, emphasized the importance of the deal, stating, “Algeria has maintained close and long-standing ties with Moscow since the Soviet era. The Su-35 deal serves as compelling evidence of the strength of this relationship.”
Professor Al-Hashem added that the Su-35 provides substantial capabilities that align with Algeria’s vast geographical size and its need for a long-range air superiority fighter with extensive radar coverage, a feature that the Su-35 excels in.
When comparing the Su-35 to Algeria’s current generation of fighter jets, Al-Hashem highlighted several differences. He noted that the Su-35 is equipped with the Irbis-E PESA radar, mounted at the front, and supplemented by a secondary passive radar system installed on the leading edges of the wings. This passive electronically scanned array (PESA) was developed concurrently with the radar used in the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jet, a feature absent in the Su-30MKA model currently operated by Algeria.
Regarding logistical challenges, Al-Hashem acknowledged that securing spare parts and logistical support remains a concern for Russian arms customers, especially since the Russia-Ukraine war exacerbated delays and shortages due to reliance on some Western components. However, Russia has begun addressing these issues by diversifying its supply chains and establishing multiple parallel production lines to meet both domestic and international demands.
Al-Hashem underscored the robustness of the Algeria-Russia relationship and its strategic dimensions, stating, “Russia will not abandon Algeria due to their close ties. Algeria holds a vital geostrategic position, located in the heart of North Africa and directly facing the European continent, particularly NATO countries.”
In conclusion, Al-Hashem asserted that this deal would significantly enhance Algeria’s air capabilities. He explained, “The Su-35 deal boosts Algeria’s aerial capabilities, providing it with a long-reaching arm for both defense and offense. The Su-35’s multi-role capabilities make it an excellent platform for launching precision-guided weapons against both aerial and surface targets (land and sea).”
