Hanwha Aerospace has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University of Surrey in the UK to collaborate in joint satellite technical demonstration projects. The non-binding MoU was signed on 25th July at the university during the week of Farnborough International Airshow 2024.
Under the agreement, both sides will initiate collaborative activities for reviewing areas of common interest in the civil aspects of space, as part of efforts to deal with the shortage of launch capacity and growing demand of satellite data.
Among the proposed collaborative activities are a series of satellite technical demonstration programs using satellite platforms from the university, and launch service by Hanwha’s Nuri rockets; developing a new commercial applications and services based on data and capabilities provided by
satellites concerned.
“The Parties will jointly identify suitable projects of common interest that can be supported and developed in both Parties and countries,” the MoU states, adding other areas of cooperation will be further explored.
The Hanwha-Surrey collaboration comes amid the increasing demand for space-based services, as the world is facing a launch capacity shortfall from the gap between robust demands for satellite launches and the lack of availability in launch services.
