French President Emmanuel Macron announced a significant boost to Ukraine’s military capabilities on Thursday. France will supply Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets, manufactured by Dassault, and train Ukrainian pilots in France.
Training is expected to begin this summer and conclude by year’s end. The number of jets to be delivered remains undisclosed.
Macron acknowledged Ukraine’s immense challenge in training new soldiers. France will equip and train an entire brigade of 4,500 Ukrainian troops to bolster their defenses.
Ukraine Seeks Accelerated Training
President Zelensky’s visit to France coincides with efforts to secure increased Western military support. With Russia making recent territorial gains, Ukraine has formally requested its allies to send instructors for on-the-ground training to expedite troop mobilization.
While Macron didn’t confirm immediate deployment of French instructors, he emphasized a collaborative approach with allies. He stressed that such actions are not seen as escalatory.
