Montenegro Becomes the First Country in the World to Adopt the CZ BREN 3 Assault Rifle

Montenegro has become the first country in the world to introduce the Czech-made CZ BREN 3 assault rifle into service, following the arrival of the first shipment of small arms under a defence cooperation agreement with the Czech Republic, RTCG reports.

The initial delivery, received in Podgorica in early October, included several hundred infantry weapons. Further shipments are expected before the end of 2026, with thousands of CZ BREN 3 rifles and hundreds of pistols, sniper rifles, submachine guns and various types of small-calibre ammunition scheduled for delivery.

The weapons are manufactured by companies within the Colt CZ Group, including Česká zbrojovka and Sellier & Bellot. The procurement forms part of Montenegro’s wider effort to modernise its armed forces and replace or upgrade existing infantry equipment.

The deal is being implemented through an intergovernmental framework agreed by the governments of Montenegro and the Czech Republic in May 2026. An implementation agreement signed in July established the arrangements for the deliveries, with the Czech Export Bank, state-owned LOM Praha and the Czech Ministry of Defence’s Agency for Intergovernmental Defence Cooperation (AMOS) involved in the process.

The first shipment was transported aboard a Czech Air Force Embraer C-390 military transport aircraft, which was making its first cargo flight. The aircraft arrived at Podgorica Airport on 2 October, where the delivery was received by Czech Ambassador Janina Hřebíčková and Montenegrin Defence Ministry State Secretary Marko Marković.

Further deliveries are planned under the existing agreement, while Podgorica and Prague are already discussing a second intergovernmental defence agreement. The talks could open the way for additional procurement and broader cooperation between the two countries’ defence sectors.
