Finmeccanica.. Huge Presence at IDEX 2015

Finmeccanica – Alenia Aermacchi, Selex ES, OTO Melara and DRS Technologies will be present at this year’s version of IDEX 2015 to be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 22 till 26 February.

Alenia Aermacchi’s products have a consolidated presence in the Middle East Region. For over 40 years the former Aermacchi (MB.326 and MB.339) jet trainers and SIAI Marchetti (SF.260) basic trainers have been in service in several countries of the Arabic peninsula, together with the Alenia G.222 tactical airlifter.

An example that makes the company proud is the choice made by the UAE to set up the Al Fursan national aerobatic team to fly with the Alenia Aermacchi MB.339 jet trainer. In plus, The UAE Air Force selected the M-346 early in 2009 and Alenia Aermacchi has interesting industrial collaborations in the UAE with Strata and Tawazun companies.

Alenia Aermacchi has developed a unique Integrated Training System (ITS) now in production for several customers including the state of the art M-346 aircraft, ITS Full Mission Simulators, Mission Support System, Academic Training Media and Training Management Tools, provided by an advanced “System of Systems”.

In the new-generation medium battlefield airlifter category, the C-27J Spartan is worldwide consider as the benchmark. It is a highly agile and adaptable air transport platform for troop transport, personnel and equipment airdrop, material transport and medical evacuation.

Implementation of a palletized mission payload as a “roll-on/roll-off” capability for the MC-27J allows tailoring of the payload to specific mission needs and allows the aircraft to be easily reconfigured back to the airlift role as national/command-level needs dictate.

The MC-27J adds significant additional ISR and communications capabilities for Battlefield Awareness and Command & Control (C2); while the addition of offensive weapons opens up other mission sets including Armed Overwatch, Close Air Support, Strike Coordination and Armed Maritime Defense.

Selex ES is a world leader in sensors including airborne radar for both surveillance and fire control applications, electro-optical sensors include infrared search and track systems and advanced laser rangefinders/designators to ensure the pinpoint targeting of precision guided weapons.

At sea, Selex ES provides total solutions for naval requirements through the whole warship lifecycle. Facilitating modern navies’ needs to comply with evolving mission scenarios, which include peacekeeping operations, shipping lane patrol, piracy deterrence and other activities, Selex ES develops and delivers naval systems and equipment capable of high operational flexibility.

On land, Selex ES is a market leader in many battlefield digitization programs, having been successfully involved in developing solutions to integrate Army Brigades within force-wide C4i systems. The company brings sensors, optronics, platforms and C4i applications together into integrated systems, providing C2 capabilities that range from single digitised dismounted soldiers up to major deployed armed units in coalition environments.

In a special interview with SDArabia, industry officials from the company revealed that during IDEX 2015, OTO Melara will display the DART guided ammunition, the Vulcano family of ammunition and the new FORTY LIGHT. Moreover, in the Siham Al Khaleej Technology stand at Navdex, the company will exhibit the HITROLE® RWS 20mm which is collaboration between the two Companies.

The FORTY LIGHT is a new generation naval weapon which fully satisfies the requirements of full automation, quick reaction time, high reliability, easy installation (no deck penetration required) and easy maintainability. It is particularly suitable for operations against targets such as surface threats, fast attacking aircraft, anti-ship helicopters and fast surface craft (asymmetric warfare). This weapon is fitted with a 40mm cannon characterized by a high rate of fire, high accuracy and two automatic ammunition feeding systems. In the Remote Control mode the FORTY LIGHT is linked to the ship’s Command Management System whereas in the Local Mode is equipped with a modern Electro Optical System provided with a daylight camera, high performance IR camera and Laser Range Finder.

Regarding the impact of this exhibition on OTO Melara’s presence in the MENA region, the officials said that the UAE is a reference customer in the Gulf Area, especially for naval systems. In fact, the Emirati Navy has virtually in service all naval calibers in OTO Melara product portfolio: HITROLE® N and G RWS 12.7mm, MARLIN WS 30mm, 40L70 Twin Compact and 76/62 C, IROF and SR.

In the coming years OTO Melara is involved in a large number of major projects considering the installation of weapon systems on several types of vessels. In addition to the Navy, also CICPA has programs in place and has expressed its intention to significantly expand its fleet with naval guns of different calibers. IDEX 2015 is definitely the best showcase to strengthen and expand the OTO Melara brands both in UAE and in the surrounding Countries, they added.
